Day 18 of 30 in 30

Looking through reference photos, I found of one of my old favorites, Tulips on Peach St. So, I decided to paint this scene again. Fond memories of that old house.

Day 17 of 30 in 30

This is a little 4x12 inch study for a larger canvas I will start soon. I'm going to put this on an 18x40 or 24x48. Should be fun.

Day 16 of 30 in 30

I am continuing with this challenge, but to paraphrase my favorite Steven Wright joke, I will do 30 paintings in 30 days, but NOT IN A ROW...

Day 15 of 30 in 30

I saw this old tractor at a vegetable farm in Norfolk and always wanted to take a crack at painting it. Maybe I'll make a bigger version.

Day 14 of 30 in 30

Well, a couple more days go by and I'm trying to catch up. September is just too nice a month on Cape Cod with too many other activities, but I'll try to continue. Here is my latest.

Day 13 of 30 in 30

Well, I'm back at it after a couple of days off. I'm struggling to get one done a day and I'm not even half way through. I  had this photo of a beautiful sky at Sandy Neck beach and thought I'd try to reproduce it. Trust me, the photo was pretty good. The painting is not quite up to the photo. But it has got me going again and I'll try to get to number 14 right away.

Day 12 of 30 in 30

As mentioned in a previous post, I caught a Striped Bass in the Canal the other day so I thought I would immortalize it in paint. (We had it for dinner). So I had small 4x12 canvas that fit this subject perfectly. I think I might do a Rainbow Trout too.

Day 11 of 30 in 30

I am trying something a little different with this painting. I am using a palette knife to do the final touches. It isn't done yet but enough is there for me to consider it an "under painting". I'll try to clean it up and finish it tomorrow. It is Saturday night and we are going out for the evening.

Finished Product

Based on the Day 10 sketch, I did this painting on a 25x25 gallery wrap canvas.

Day 10 of 30 in 30

Here's my Day 10 sketch of another beach/dune scene. I used my palette knife on the beach grass which I then used on a larger painting of the same scene. It is a bit of a crunch to get in a painting a day, especially in September when the weather is so good for outdoor activities. But this is a very useful challenge. I am "forced" to paint nearly every day and try new techniques and styles.

Day 9 of 30 in 30

I took one of my old favorites and re-did it in sand dunes instead of red rocks. I am only 1/2 day behind. I am still trying to get some of the larger works done while I do these smaller ones. I am only spending a an hour or two on the small ones sort of as a "warm-up" for bigger paintings.

Days 7 and 8 of 30 in 30

Playing a little catch-up after a great weekend. Yesterday it was a couple of vehicles on the beach, Today it was a couple of garden scenes. In Hidden Garden, I tried to capture the dappled light under the rhododendron bush where Judy has a few  pieces of broken sculpture. In Enchanted Garden, I painted a trellis from a photo I took on the Cape Cod Hydrangea Festival. I think I'll stick to the vehicles. Hopefully I'll get number 9 up tomorrow and be back on track.

Day 6 on 30 in 30

This guy pulled in next to us at Race Point and set up his Bug for the night. He had a great spot to enjoy this terrific beach. We are already planning our next trip to P-town.

Day 5 of 30 in 30

Got a little behind over Labor Day Weekend. Golf and 2 trips to Race Point to cook out, fish and watch whales. Great weekend.
Anyway, saw this Ford pickup parked at the Beachcomber in Wellfleet and knew I had to take a crack at it. I'll try to refine this 5x7 later. Onto Day 6.

Day 4 of 30 in 30

I decided to jump right on the study I did of Rock Harbor and do a bigger version. This is a 25x25 square gallery wrap canvas and is pretty much done. Doing the study really helped and I was able to get to this point in a short time. The big change from the study is the sky. I added more clouds and drama (I think). I'll look at it for a few more days and decide if I need to keep working it until it is ruined.

Day 3 of 30 in 30

Switching themes, I decided to do a Cape Cod Tidal Flat scene. I intend to make a bigger version of  this sketch. We'll see how that comes out. This is a scene looking east from Rock Harbor in Orleans. Many of the beaches along this stretch have a low tide that goes forever.

Day 2 of 30 in 30

There are a few things I decided to do in this challenge. First, I thought I would follow several themes. I am going to do boats, beaches, vehicles, maybe birds, and buildings. All themes subject to change. I'll try to do a bunch of the same theme but will probably bounce around. The other thing is I will spend  up to two hours for the painting. I want to paint quickly and want to get out an do other things. Golf tomorrow and there are tons of striped bass in the Cape Cod Canal.
Here is my quick attempt at my friends' boat near Waquoit Bay.

Maybe another boat tomorrow or I may switch themes... Who knows.

30 Paintings in 30 Days

I've decided to participate in a challenge put out by Leslie Saeta to do 30 new paintings in 30 days. So, along with my friends Kim, Joe, Kathy and Joanne, we will try to meet the goal of a painting a day for the month of September. The rules are pretty loose and accommodating in case we get behind for a day or two. September is a busy month with beachin', fishin', jeepin' and now "artin'", so I will need some discipline to meet this goal.
Here is my first entry for Day One.
I took a photo of this boat coming in with a load of crabs while I was fishing on the canal the other morning. Caught 3 stripers and kept one for dinner (released the others) but that's another story.
